Summary

The ones that got away reunite at a big Italian wedding in this second-chance romance from debut author Ali Rosen, the James Beard Award–nominated writer and host of Potluck with Ali Rosen 。 Stella Park is elated to celebrate her best friend’s wedding in the Italian countryside—and maybe she also needs this escape from her personal and her professional life。 Writing recipes for a living isn’t all it’s cooked up to be。 But the revelry is short lived when she runs into the ex she hasn’t seen since she broke his heart ten years ago, Samuel Gordon。 As her past gets propelled to the forefront, Stella tries not to question the choices she made a decade ago。 When Stella and Samuel keep getting pushed together during a weekend filled with delectable food, Indian and Italian wedding traditions, and unplanned detours in gorgeous locales, she attempts to ignore that maybe he really was the one that got away。 Playing it safe has always been Stella’s dependable rule book。 But maybe Samuel is worth the risk—and perhaps some love stories just need more time to marinate。

This was cute。 I needed a light book that would break up some heavy reading with another, and this was perfect。 It was very cute and I thought Samuel was an adorable character。 3。5 stars。

enough with the anxietyToo much anxiety and being a neurotic! It was hard to get into because of that。 It got better much later in the book though。

This book is part romance novel, part pyschology 101 and part a marriage counseling session。 A bit muddled in more places than I could enjoy but overall a pleasant read。 I usually pick a light romance novel after reading a heavier historical novel, this one was not quite it but interesting nonetheless。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ali Rosen can write。 Every sentence is important and rich and the banter was perfection。 But when the female lead is so emotionally stunted that you cannot connect with her, you just want to give up on her。 3 stars because the writing was great but I cannot wait until the book is 90% complete to save my relationship with the main character。

Quick but wonderful readI think we can all agree that we have been both Stella and Samuel at any point in life Their stubborness and determination are what make this such an easy and uplifting read!

The FMC was super annoying but I loved the MMC and stuck with it for that reason。 The details of the Italian wedding were fabulous as well as the food descriptions。 Also, it's an easy quick read。 The FMC was super annoying but I loved the MMC and stuck with it for that reason。 The details of the Italian wedding were fabulous as well as the food descriptions。 Also, it's an easy quick read。 。。。more

Cute love story spanning over nine years。Loved the back and forth ❤️

Meh。 Main character too spun up in her own self for me。

I devoured this book like a bear eats a bag of marshmallows。。。 with haste and no regrets。 This is my first book from Ali Rosen and I loved her writing style and will definitely be checking out her other titles。 This romance follows Samuel and Stella who are reunited at a friend's wedding in Italy after 9 years apart。 At first we don't know how or why their relationship imploded and we slowly learn through the back and forth chapters of past and current events。 I typically don't like this as it c I devoured this book like a bear eats a bag of marshmallows。。。 with haste and no regrets。 This is my first book from Ali Rosen and I loved her writing style and will definitely be checking out her other titles。 This romance follows Samuel and Stella who are reunited at a friend's wedding in Italy after 9 years apart。 At first we don't know how or why their relationship imploded and we slowly learn through the back and forth chapters of past and current events。 I typically don't like this as it can get confusing but the way it was done here was seamless。 I felt a connection with Stella in how her past experiences of watching heartbreak within her family leads her to have a skewed view of what romance and love can really be。 There were definite moments where I wanted to slap her but her anxiety and fear of being left alone and broken resonated with me。 Samuel lives his life with confidence; he says what he wants and doesn't let fear get in the way of how he lives and loves。 Some of the things he says regarding both a person's love and work life were very poignant。 Finally, the descriptions of Italy and the food were so wonderful I immediately went out and bought some pistachio gelato。 I thought this book would be a quick, no frills romance to fit in between some horror and sci-fi novels (it is spooky season) but it has ended up being one of my favorite books of the year。 5 really big stars! 。。。more

Meh。 Redundant at times。 I had a hard time reading & rereading about the protagonists’s anxiety。 Seemed a bit self-indulgent to me。 Wanted to slap her at times & say “get a hold of yourself!” The recipes at the end of the book were nice。 The descriptions of Italy made me want to spend some time there。 I prefer a deeper novel。

Amanda

Annoyed at how the 29 year old main character female has the emotional maturity of a teenager。It was difficult to remind myself that she is my age with the way she acted throughout the book。 Caught myself numerous times getting frustrated。

Such an emotional swoonworthy book - loved it!

3。75 🌟Dragged a little in places but I was rooting for her to get it together and for them to get together。

Urgh!! YUCK。 What a horrible and narcissistic lead female。 It’s unbelievable how dumb, mean, self-centred, and pathetic she is。 The main guy is too kind and unrealistic in the context of this plot。 The only thing done well is the food descriptions。

Rachel Gorsuch

Heartwarming and MouthwateringDescriptive writing transported me。 I was seeing, tasting, and feeling everything Stella was。 I was fully invested in both timelines and never got confused。 Now time for some gelato。

I Could Not Get Into the BookBy the fourth chapter, I was ready to give up。 I tried putting it down for a few hours or a day or two。 I made it through it。 The characters were dull and I did not find them entertaining。 The plot line was boring。 Very disappointing。

This book dragged。 Perhaps I couldn’t relate well enough to all the anxiety and what was holding Stella back but it just felt like too much。 I was ready for the book to be over

a nice, light read。A really cute story。 Not too heavy。 Perfect when you want a little romance without all the trash。 Great for a little light reading。

Really delicious food, gorgeousItalian venue, annoying main character, predictable ending。

Not my cup of tea。 Way too wordy & the multiple timelines just made it drag。

I really wanted to like this book。 Seriously。 It was cute, it made me chuckle, the romance was not “hide this book from my dad” but rather a gentle simmer on the stove which was nice。 *potential spoilers coming*I wish the recipes would have been embedded within the book - like introducing the chapter - that the recipe would correspond with what was going on or about to happen。 I loooooooooved how the FMC talked about the food she encountered along the way, I WISH THERE WAS MORE OF THAT!I also wa I really wanted to like this book。 Seriously。 It was cute, it made me chuckle, the romance was not “hide this book from my dad” but rather a gentle simmer on the stove which was nice。 *potential spoilers coming*I wish the recipes would have been embedded within the book - like introducing the chapter - that the recipe would correspond with what was going on or about to happen。 I loooooooooved how the FMC talked about the food she encountered along the way, I WISH THERE WAS MORE OF THAT!I also was over the whole “trauma from my sister’s relationship。” Sorry for using quote unquote twice but I can’t help it。 I get that she basically grew up with this guy, but it just made me want to shake her by the shoulders and tell her to get over it and go get the way too nice guy。 The friend dynamic was cute, but I was definitely missing more of their stories, what they had going on in their own lives。 The author spent so much time talking about how much the FMC cherished them, but then it kind of fell flat when you didn’t get to see more into their thoughts and feelings。 Also, why didn’t they shake her by the shoulders? Or pry out what was going on sooner? Seems like the friends are a little more self-centric than us let on by the author。 。。。more

I don't know how I feel about this book。 It was a well told little romance, but I wanted to strangle or at least shake some sense into Stella, the main character。 Talk about someone who has an issue with commitment and all because she fears that commitment failing。 Shortly after I began reading , I wanted to drag her to therapy, but she was a very stubborn young woman。 That was the part that didn't work for me。 How could someone who seemed intelligent and seemingly competent not see that her del I don't know how I feel about this book。 It was a well told little romance, but I wanted to strangle or at least shake some sense into Stella, the main character。 Talk about someone who has an issue with commitment and all because she fears that commitment failing。 Shortly after I began reading , I wanted to drag her to therapy, but she was a very stubborn young woman。 That was the part that didn't work for me。 How could someone who seemed intelligent and seemingly competent not see that her delusional view of life and love was unhealthy。 Maybe the was supposed to be the great conundrum。Loved the setting and the food and wine (especially the recipes at the end), but it took far too long for her to come to her senses, but I'm glad she did。 。。。more

Cute and insightful romance read!I love a sweet romance and this one drew me right in as Stella and Samuel meet in the first pages。 Their romance gave me all the fizzly feels of falling in love and made me want to run away to New York and then Italy to find my own Samuel, even though I’m 45 and happily married。 ☺️ But, hey, romance that doesn’t make you feel anything isn’t worth it’s salt, is it?I particularly loved Stella’s supportive and loving friendships。 Every girl wants a group of gal pals Cute and insightful romance read!I love a sweet romance and this one drew me right in as Stella and Samuel meet in the first pages。 Their romance gave me all the fizzly feels of falling in love and made me want to run away to New York and then Italy to find my own Samuel, even though I’m 45 and happily married。 ☺️ But, hey, romance that doesn’t make you feel anything isn’t worth it’s salt, is it?I particularly loved Stella’s supportive and loving friendships。 Every girl wants a group of gal pals to walk through the seasons of life with and Stella’s friends were detailed and wonderfully written as women of complexity yet also with a simple goodness to their character。 Rosen has a flair for lovely descriptive writing, and I enjoyed Stella’s time eating her way through Italy and enjoying the beautiful scenery in Umbria and at her friend’s half Indian/ half Italian wedding。 This is a delightful and easy read with some great characters and insightful, thought provoking nuggets sprinkled throughout。 。。。more
